Learning Outcomes • Pupils should understand why the Berlin Blockade happened. This will include the events that took place in the led up to the Blockade. • What was the Berlin Airlift? • What was so significant about the airlift and how did this affect relations between the two superpowers?
First Major Crisis • The first major crisis concerned Germany. Both sides recognised that Germany could play a crucial role in the centre of Europe.
What each side wanted to do • As we have touched upon before, the US and the USSR had a very different outlook on what should happen to Germany. The Soviet Union were more concerned about their own recovery and wanted to keep Germany permanently weak to prevent another invasion.
