In June, 1948 Stalin blockaded West Berlin, cutting off all supplies • In response, American and British officials started the Berlin Airlift • Over a period of 327 days, they delivered 2.3 million tons of supplies to West Berlin • The flights were extremely dangerous • Pilots flew around the clock with few and short breaks • Weather over Berlin was dangerous and unpredictable • Landing on a crowded airfield in the middle of a city was difficult • The Soviet Union lifted the blockade in May of 1949
