About the Book • First published in Australia on November 1st, 2004. It was first published in America one year later. • Was originally written as 20 short stories to encourage the author’s son to read. • This book is being made into a film that will debut in 2011.
The Author • John Flanagan was born in Australia May 22nd, 1944. (Age 76) He is best known for the novel series Ranger’s Apprentice. Beforebecoming a novelist, John Flanagan did advertising and television commercials.
Setting • Ranger’s Apprentice is set in the land of Araluen.
Main Characters • Will – The main character of all the books; Short, but also strong willed. • Halt – The mysterious ranger of the Redmont Fief • Jenny – Short, and well rounded girl who is one of Will’s acquaintances. • Alyss – Tall and elegant girl who Will also grew up with • Horace – Large and Muscular boy, who is Will’s rival, but soon to be friend.
Plot Summary • The book starts off introducing all the characters. They are all orphans, and live with the baron of the castle because their parents were killed by the Evil Lord Morgarath in the great war. A very important day is approaching on them. This day is the choosing day where they all get chosen by a crafts master or they get sent to the fields if they are not chosen. Will wanted to go to battleschool but ended up getting chosen by Halt, the mysterious ranger.
Plot Summary Cont. • Will begins to like Halt and they eventually, after much training, go and get Will’s new horse, Tug. Will and Tug instantly bond. One day they track down a large boar and get the Baron’s men to come and hunt it. Horace, who is in battleschool comes along too. They kill one boar but another appears as everyone is distracted and charges Will. Horace intervenes. The boar slips by Horace and continues towards Will. But Halt kills the boar in a split second. Eventually they get news of the Kalkara being sent out from Margarath. These are very ferocious bear like creatures that are assassins. Will and Halt track them down and kill them in the end. After that they are heroes.
My Rating • I really enjoyed this book, and it kept me interested all the way through. I would give this book a 4/4.
