  2. When peoplemove Migration is the movement of people from one place to another. A migrant is someone who moves from one place to another. Apu is a migrant!

  3. Apu is the local shopkeeper from the Simpson’s. He wasn’t born in America, but, as you can see, he has come to love his second home. Things couldn’t be better for the ‘Kwik-e-Mart’ owner. But there’s aproblem brewing in Springfield…

  4. Why is Apu being forced to leave America? Watch the video and answer the questions

  5. Push Factors Lack of good jobs? Poor health care? Poor schools and universities? Unhappiness? Poverty? An unattractive future? Push factors are things that force migrants away from their home countries. What do you think forced Apu away from Calcutta, India?

  6. Pull Factors Well paid jobs? Good health care? Good schools and universities? The American Dream? Riches and wealth? A better standard of living? Pull factors are things that attract migrants to other countries What do you think attracted Apu to Springfield, USA?

  7. Migration: The Ups and Downs • Watch the clips on migration from Morocco to Almeria in Spain. • Migrants from Morocco move to Spain to work for farmers. This benefits both sides. • But, increasingly problems have started to arise. • Write down the ups and downs as a table.

  8. Here’s some to get you started… The Ups • Migrant workers get a good wage The Downs • Some farmers employ workers on the ‘black market’ and don’t pay them very well
