Are these questions right? The recruitment unit in UNDP Iraq prepared the Interview Package and requested on of the secretaries to copy them for each interview panel members. However the Secretary just found out she won the lottery and was so happy that she left the office to tell her family. In all the excitement, the interview questions got mixed up.
Interviewing • Prior to the Interview • Introduction at the Interview • During the Interview • Closure of the Interview
Prior to the Interview • Take some time to learn what the organization is looking for • Study the job description (many organizations identify competencies required in the vacancy announcement) In case, there are no competencies stated, do the following: • Think about the obvious competencies for the position • Look at advertisements & postings from competitors • Compile a list of competencies from other sources
During the Interview The Interviewers are looking for: • Do you have experience and education for the work? • Will you do the job? Do you have motivation? Are you disciplined? • How do you fit with the team, people, department, organization. The role of the interviewers is to probe, so in case they ask you the same question again, do not panic!
During the Interview - (a) The Panel will be asking/probing using technique CAR CAR • Context: Get an overview of the situation: what the situation was about, how he/she first got involved, what were the key events and the time frame • Actions: Cover significant events, refer back to notes to keep on track, ask for specific instances (‘is there one meeting in particular that stand out that you could tell me about?’) • Results: Get the outcome, impact or results: ask questions such as how did it turn out? What was the final result Note: do not panic if the panel asks you about your thoughts, feelings, lessons learnt
During the Interview – (b) – follow-up questions e.g. Original Question: ‘Give me an example of a time when you were unable to meet your goals. What did you do?’ Follow-up Questions: • ‘Tell me more about_______?’ • ‘What made _________ an important issue?’ • ‘How prepared were you to__________?’ • ‘What were some concerns about _______?’ • ‘How did you feel about ___________?’
During the Interview – (c) Tips how to answer: • Listen well and answer the question being asked. In case a question has more sub-questions, answer all sub-question • Answer follow-up questions • At the end of each question, ask whether you replied to their question or whether the Panel wishes to get more details • Prioritize the answer, present most critical aspects first
Telephone Interview • Make sure that you can hear all of the panel members • Provide a back-up telephone number in advance • In case you do not understand the question because of delays in connection, ask for the repetition of the question • In case the interview panel is located in a different time zone, check upfront appropriate ‘time difference’
Closing the Interview • Thank to everybody for their time • Ask questions related to selection process and time frame • Ask questions related to the position
Other Important Tips • Wear clothes that are conservative • Do not take notes during the Interview (unless it is a phone interview) • Arrive 5-10 minutes early • Be professional and discreet when talking about your past employers
