  1. Making zinc iodide from zinc and iodine • Equipment you need: • 1 test tube containing 0.5g iodine • 1 test tube containing 2g zinc • 1 test tube containing 10ml ethanol • 1 clean test tube • 1 test tube rack • 1 beaker filled with hot water from the kettle (careful- hot!) • 1 thermometer • 1 measuring cylinder (10ml) • 1 small funnel • 1 piece filter paper

  2. Making zinc iodide: what needs to be done? • Split these tasks between the two practitioners for maximum efficiency • Check you have all the equipment you need • Add the ethanol to the iodine and record the temperature • Add the zinc to the iodine and stir with a thermometer, then note the temperature • If the solution is not clear, place the tube in a beaker of hot water for a few minutes and keep stirring until clear • Put a piece of filter paper in the funnel and place it over the clean test tube • Pour in the liquid • Take a watch glass and put a few drops of the liquid on it with a pipette • Place the watch glass over the hot water

  3. 5. Making Zinc Iodide: scribe • Write down the temperature at the start and after you have added the zinc and stirred? • Describe the properties of the zinc and iodine you were given. • Observe and write down what happened when • The ethanol was added to the iodine • The zinc was added to the iodine • The zinc and iodine had been heated • The solution was filtered • The solution dried on the watch glass

  6. Making Zinc Iodide: Analyser • What happened to the temperature when the zinc was added? What does this tell you? • What happened to the colour of the solution after the zinc was added? What does this tell you? • What formed on the watch glass? What do you think this was? • Why did we filter the solution? What did this get rid of? • How can you tell a chemical reaction happened?

  7. Splitting up zinc iodide into zinc and iodine • Equipment you need: • 1 test tube containing the zinc iodide you made • 1 beaker • Bung attached to graphite electrodes • Power pack • 2 wires • 1 bulb • 2 crocodile clips • 1 tissue

  8. Splitting zinc iodide: what needs to be done? • Split these tasks between the two practitioners for maximum efficiency • Check you have the equipment you need • Pour the solution you made into a beaker • Wipe both electrodes with a tissue till they are clean • Put the electrodes in the beaker • Connect the battery pack to the bulb and turn it on • Take the bulb off and attach crocodile clips instead • Clip the crocodile clips to the electrodes (1 on each) • Wait for about 5 minutes • Look at the electrodes – can you see anything happening? • Take the electrodes out of the solution and wipe them on a tissue. What can you see?

  11. Splitting zinc iodide: scribe • Write down what the solution looked like when you started. • What could you see at the positive electrode? • What could you see at the negative electrode? • What could you see when you wiped the electrodes on a tissue after the reaction?

  12. Splitting Zinc Iodide: Analyser • Why did we use a bulb at the beginning? • Why did we clean the electrodes? • What do you think it was that you saw happen at each electrode? • How can you tell a chemical reaction took place? • You had to use electricity to make this reaction happen. Do you think spitting zinc iodide takes in energy or gives out energy?
