Auden • Born in England • Raised Anglo Catholic • Mother was involved with the church • Father was a Psychologist • Began writing at a young age, knew he wanted to become a writer • Lost his faith , during his time in boarding school • Very promiscuous and had many relationships. • Was drafted for WWII but did not serve.

  4. Poem Analysis Epitaph on a Tyrant Analysis The First line may be a reference to Hitler and his goal of creating a “perfect” race. The Second line may refer to propaganda , and how it was relatable and inspiring. The third line refers to the familiarity he may have amongst the Nazis. The fifth line may describe the power that Hitler had, and how everyone with authority had to agree with him. Perfection, of a kind, was what he was after, And the poetry he invented was easy to understand; He knew human folly like the back of his hand, And was greatly interested in armies and fleets; When he laughed, respectable senators burst with laughter, And when he cried the little children died in the streets.
