The Glorious Past • Friday 22nd June, 1945 • Inauguration of GCCE in a small annexe adjacent to D.J.Science College • July 1948 • Commencement of the Golden Era marked with devotion, dedication and sincere efforts to promote commerce education • April 1972 – 27 years after its Establishment • Birth of Commecs – the Old Students’ Association of Govt. College of Commerce and Economics
Today COMMECS is: • The Old Students’ Association with over 500 members, established with a mission to: • Provide a get-to-gather forum for its members and their families • To acknowledge the contributions to the society, made by its Stalwarts

The Peril… • Ineffective governance and management practices • Poor Students’ Attendance • Inefficient use of available resources • Inadequate funding • Poor recruitment practices and inadequate development of faculty and staff • Lack of attention and support to research and Development • Politicization of faculty, staff and students
…the Deterioration Continued over the Years… • Inadequate systems has led to: • Loss of Top Positions • Lower overall grades • Demotivated Students • Poor Faculty Performance due to the absence of accountability and transparency • Low staff morale due to the Incongruity of responsibility and authority
The Need… • Formation of a central body to facilitate quality assurance of academic management, governance and implementation of the educational policies, and linking funding to the quality of performance
… and the Promise • The members promised to bring a quantum change in the quality of education through: • Motivation of faculty and students • Implementing Best Educational Practices • Control of the curriculum and its delivery • Monitoring of educational standards through internal and external verifiers • Adopting other Quality Assurance Measures
Thus started the Beginning of A New Era…. • CET Vision “To promote excellence in education for seekers of knowledge by giving them two bequests_____ the first is Roots, the second is Wings”.
Top Priority is given to address the anomaly in the promise and the delivery of education The system of accountability and a depoliticization of all admissions, placements, promotions and examinations, is religiously followed Teachers demonstrate expertise at various level of teaching and research, and are provided with continuous professional development opportunities Serious interventions are planned in the writing of curricula and text books Mode of Testing and evaluation reflects the growing awareness of process-based learning The Trustees Pledge to ensure that:

Value Addition at CU: Curriculum • Serious reconsideration will be given to the practice of specialization and the inclusion of social sciences in programmes in order to prepare candidates for critical and moral reasoning, effective communication, and self-directed life-long learning • Emphasis will also be given to introduce latest methods of Learning and Assessment
Research and Development • High priority will be assigned to make Research and Development a critical activity by • Making a major allocation of funds, creation of endowments and an enabling environment • Linkages with business and industry • Synergy would be sought through financial incentives provided by the government to encourage funding of higher education
Funding… • The CET requires significantly more financial resources than the current reserves. It will now: • Raise funds and Ensure their proper Utilization • With improved financial management, provision for funding will be made through an annual review of a three year rolling budget, and the development of permanent sources of support such as endowments
