Hanging Lighting Instruments THE107
Hanging Lights • This presentation will walk you through the basic steps of hanging a theatrical lighting instrument • It will use a 36 degree Source Four Leko • Keep in mind that while the process stays the same for other lights, there are a few differences
1. Select the instrument • Read the light plot and make sure you get the correct instrument • Refer to the presentation on instrumentation to differentiate between lights
2. Examine the light • Make sure the c-clamp is secure • Are the shutters pushed in? • Is the barrel secure?
3. Put the light on the pipe • Make sure the c-clamp is open • Always keep a hand on the light
4. Finger tighten the clamp • Tighten until the bolt touches the pipe • This secures the light temporarily
5. Attach safety chain • Make sure chain passes through yoke and around pipe • Do not twist chain
6. Tighten c-clamp • Use wrench to tighten • Do not over-tighten • Light should not move
7. Pull shutters out • Pull all four shutters out • Leaving shutters in damages lamp if light is brought up, plus it appears to be damaged if no light escapes
8. Rough focus unit • Point unit towards the indicated focus area • Use pan bolt to adjust side to side
8. Rough focus (cont.) • Use tilt handles to adjust up and down movement
9. Plug unit in • Make sure to leave enough room for movement • Do not tie instrument pigtail to pipe; tie behind cable if needed • Do not wrap cable around pipe repeatedly
10. Final check • Make sure everything is tight • Inform master electrician that unit is complete • Look pleased with yourself
Other units • Hanging PARs and fresnels are simpler • Neither have shutters • PARs have rotating lenses for focusing – no need to adjust during hang • Fresnels have only one adjustment – spot to flood beams. Typically you would put the fresnel into the spot position during hang
