  2. Bike to Work Day

  3. Some History • Started in Boulder 40+ years ago • Organized in our region by DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Goverments)since 1995 • Bike to Work Day is statewide: June is “Colorado Bike Month” • Always the fourth Wednesday in June (designated by the CO Legislature) • Our region’s Bike to Work Day is the second largest in the nation (behind San Francisco)

  4. An Annual Event • In 2018, there were… • More than 35,000 estimated participants • 36 percent of riders were first-time participants • Over 500 companies competed in the Business Challenge • Over 250 Stations region-wide • <add company-specific participation numbers here>

  5. A Competitive Event 2018 Business Challenge Winners: • Rank 1: Google Boulder  |  Effort index: 5.29 • Rank 2: NCAR/UCAR  |  Effort index: 5.14 • Rank 3: Davis Partnership Architects  |  Effort index: 4.45 • Rank 4: Hord CoplanMacht  |  Effort index: 4.44 • Rank 5: CU Denver  |  Effort index: 4.36 • Rank 6: Bridgeport/Ashford/Rockies  |  Effort index: 4.27 • Rank 7: Plexus  |  Effort index: 4.19 • Rank 8: Boa Technology  |  Effort index: 4.13 • Rank 9: Group 14 Engineering, PBC  |  Effort index: 3.98 • Rank 10: Navigant Boulder  |  Effort index: 3.92 • <Your Company Score, if known> Effort Index –balancing effort by size The effort index is designed to create a level playing field between companies of different sizes. On the average, participation decreases with the square root of company size. For instance, companies with 10 employees average 60% participation, while those with 1,000 employees average 6%. When graded on this index, winners from previous years had an effort index between three and six, meaning their participation was three to six times higher than expected participation for a company of that size.

  6. Common Fears • “I’m out of shape.” Ride at an easy pace. Try your route on a weekend to test. • “I’ll smell.” Unless in training, most bike commuters don’t need to shower at work; just ride at an easy pace to stay cool and dry. • “I have to dress up for work.” Keep a set of clothing at work, or pack clothes to change into when you get to work that day. • “My bike is old and beat-up.” Buy local by visiting a local bike shop for a tune-up before Bike to Work Day. • “The roads aren’t safe.” Be a defensive cyclist, and make eye-contact with drivers as you ride. Always follow the rules of the road (the same rules as apply to drivers). Wear bright clothing, and a helmet.
