Facts About Nuclear Energy • Nuclear energy is produced by a controlled nuclear chain reaction and creates heat. • The sun uses nuclear fusion of hydrogen atoms into helium atoms.
How Nuclear Energy Works • Steam power plant that is fueled with elements like uranium • Fuel is placed in reactor and atoms split • Energy is used to heat water until steaming • Steam pushes on turbine, forces coil water on magnetic field http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?title=The_workings_of_a_nuclear_powerplant&video_id=28381
Advantages • Costs the same as coal • Does not pollute the air and doesn’t contribute to the green house effect • Nuclear power is always reliable • Produces small amounts of waste
Disadvantages • Storage and arrangement of radioactive waste • Disposal can last for thousands of years • Terrorists can use for potential applications • Some people are scared of it • It is non-renewable
Is Nuclear Energy Good For The Environment? Nuclear Energy is both good and bad for the environment but it is good for the environment for not helping global warming, acid rain or urban smog. Also it requires a fair amount of space compared to dams and windmills.
Nuclear Energy Renewable or Nonrenewable Nuclear energy is nonrenewable. It is nonrenewable because it is made from uranium and when you dig up all of the uranium it will be gone until it has been remade years later.
Can You Use Nuclear Energy in Pittsburgh • It is not good for Pittsburgh , because Pittsburgh is a small city and it takes a wide area to put down a nuclear power plant. Also if something goes wrong a lot of people could be killed.
Nuclear Energy in the Future In the future not large of a possibility of this form of electricity or energy will be used for its uses of uranium ores and fossil fuels. Also being it will not be optional it may lower the radiation levels. In other words this energy form will be scarce in later times.
Vocabulary Words • Turbine-Changes kinetic energy into mechanical energy • Control Rods-Rods that slide up and down between energy rods • Magnox- is a obsolete type of nuclear energy reactor
