Background • Vietnam War in the 1960’s
What happened? • 3 students( John Tinker 15, Mary Beth Tinker 13, Christopher Echardt) • Principal asked that the students remove their armbands or be suspended
What Happened? • The students did not remove the armbands • It is taken to court( Trail Court, Circuit Court, and Supreme Court)
Issue • Are students protected by the 1st Amendment freedoms of speech/expression and to what extent?

You learned that the students have a right to freedom of speech, as long as it is not disrupting the school and not violating the rights of others. You and your groups members will be given a scenario. You are the administrators of the school and must decide what to do Make sure in your groups assign one person to be the spokesperson, who will share your groups decission
Scenario In the parking lot, you noticed a truck that is flying the Confederate flag. A few African American students have come to you about this situation, because the flag offends them. Is flying the flag allowable under the law?
