  3. demographics • 62.8% of food pantry clients are completely uninsured. • 24.3% have been kicked off a government health insurance program due to paperwork issues

  4. key findings • 69% of families have had to skip a meal or go to an emergency food pantry because of medical expenses. • 70.8% have had to go without needed medical care due to their inability to afford it.

What can be done? • Hospitals can adopt charity care and fair billing practices. • The local government can review contracts with ambulance companies and other healthcare providers to ensure they promote decent billing practices. • The state government can expand access to healthcare programs so more low income Utahns can afford basic care, and pass legislation requiring hospitals to follow fair billing practices.
