Contents • Hazards associated with gas cylinders • Main causes of accidents • Types of gas cylinders we use • School arrangements: SOPs and training • Basic do’s and don’ts when working with gas cylinders • Take home message
Hazards associated with gas cylinders • Impact from falling cylinders • Manual handling injuries • Impact from blast of a gas cylinder explosion • Rapid release of compressed gas • Contact with the released gas • Fire resulting from the escape of flammable gases
Main causes of accidents • Inadequate training & supervision • Poor installation • Poor examination & maintenance • Poor handling & storage • Faulty equipment (badly fitted valves and regulators) • Inadequately ventilated working conditions • Incorrect filling procedures • hidden damage
School gas safety arrangements: SOPs, Training and Monitoring • Guidance on the safe use of gas cylinders • SOP for gas cylinder transport • Online gas safety awareness induction • Hands-on gas regulator changing training • Annual visual monitoring of gas regulators • POC: Jonathan Lee (C6.01/X64386)
Basic do’s and don’ts when working with gas cylinders • Do not change regulators unless you have been trained • Do not attempt to modify regulator threads • Do not force any connection that does not fit • Do not use broken or damaged regulators • Do not use PTFE tape on regulator threads • Do not leave a cylinder free standing • Do undertake a visual inspection of the regulator prior to use • Do complete gas safety online induction if you are a user • Do ask for advice when unsure (Jonathan Lee)
Take home message • User: must complete the online gas safety awareness training • Do not change gas regulators unless you have been trained • Report damaged/leaking cylinder immediately • Be aware of the presence of gas cylinder
