Chapter 2 Section 1 Displacement and velocity
Objectives • Students will be able to: • Describe the motion in terms of frame of reference, displacement, time, and velocity. • Calculate the displacement of an object traveling at a known velocity for specific time interval.
What is Motion? • Have you heard of motion before? Can you give me some examples of motion • Motion is an object's change in position over time when compared with a reference point.
One dimensional motion • What is one dimensional motion? It is the simplest form of motion. One way to simplify the concept is to consider the kind of motion that takes place in one direction. • An example of one dimensional motion is the motion of a commute train on a straight track.
Reference point • In order for motion to be a reference point is needed. • What is a reference point? • Is the object or point that stays in the same place and never changes.
Frame of reference • With motion we will need something called frame of reference. • What is a frame of reference? • is a system for specifying the precise location of objects in space and time. An example of a frame of reference can be if we retake the idea of a commute train , any of the stations along its route can serve as a frame of reference.
Frame of reference • When you select a reference frame , note that it remains fixed for the problem in question and has an origin, or starting point, from which the motion is measured. • If an object is a rest(not moving) does it has motion? • No, its position does not change with respect to a fixed frame of reference.
Example • An example of an object at rest can be the benches on the platform of the subway station because never moves down to another subway station. • Now lets go an way the video
Displacement What is displacement? It is the change in position of an object. When an object moves from one position to another, the length of the straight line drawn from its initial position to the objects final position is called displacement.
Displacement formula x = xf – xi displacement = final position – initial position. • Displacement is not always equal to the distance traveled. • The SI unit of displacement is themeter,m.
Positive and negative Displacement • Just like math, if you are moving to the right(east) or moving upward(north) , you displacement is positive. • When you are moving to the left(west) or moving downward(south), your displacement is negative.
Average velocity • What is average velocity. • It is the total displacement divided by the time interval during which the displacement occurred. • It is also the slope of the line
Average velocity • ). • In SI, the unit of velocity ismeters per second, abbreviated asm/s.
Lets look at how displacement work • Lets look at worksheet
Instantaneous velocity • Is the velocity of an object at some instant or a specific point in the object’s path.
Lets look at how instantaneous velocity woks • Lets looks at a worksheet
homework • Lets do page 40 the part that says practice
closure • Today we learned about displacement and average velocity. We also talked about instantaneous velocity. • Tomorrow we are going to continue with study guide for chapter 1.
