So how do we get there? • U9 and U10 teams mirror our U11 goal. • Two top teams and two lower teams at U11 sets up for teams at all three levels (C1/C2/C3) at U12 • U9 and U10 team formation will start us down this road.
What are the problems we encounter with the new direction? • We were not as dominant at the U9-U11 age groups • At U11 We lost 3 players who were not interested in creating a strong age group as they couldn’t see past their own child’s winning record • At U11 Our classic 3 teams struggled as more stronger players were pulled up to the top level • We were overly strong at the U12 age group at two levels • We had more teams playing classic 3 than we needed at U12 • At U12 we lost 2 players who were searching for that quick classic 1 placement
What worked ? • We developed a solid group of 20 players at U9-U11 • At U13 we have a stepping stone and it is attainable with more opportunities for all players • We did all of this with 99.5% non recruited players • Although rostered at a level that was too low for the team the coaches entered the team into tournaments at a higher level • The top team at each age level was put under pressure not just to contain the best players but to be the better team and outplay rather than out run, out muscle or even outscore the opponents • This next year we are restructuring the master coach program and adding a Technical Coach to spend more time with players on the basic things • As we have improved the top, stabilized the middle our job over the next year is to push the lower half harder

Team Meeting We need to make sure that all teams follow the same procedure to develop consistency within the club. The team meeting is not only the best chance to hand out all the information on schedules and team guidelines but it a good opportunity to begin team building. Coaches Expectations • I the coach expect the following from the team • All players work hard in practice • All players notify me of any absence • All players are responsible for their own soccer equipment • That each player arrives up at least 30 minutes prior to games • That the players arrive at least 5 minutes early for practice • That all players and parents never question a referee’s decision • That if there is a problem on playing time, team issues or anything else that I am approached

An attacking player makes a short pass that hits you and rebounds to a defending player. You should: allow play to continue. B) stop play. Restart the game with a dropped ball. As a coach how can you help the referee program? Points Scale 0-4 correct – This group can never question any decision made by the referee 4-7 correct – This group has the ability to offer help on most basic of referee things 7-9 correct- This group has the ability to aid the referee’s development at the appropriate time 10 Correct – You are now the teams referee mentor and cover if we don’t get any officials Congratulations!

Playing Time Playing time in the competitive program is earned not guaranteed. If a player attends practices and demonstrates a high work rate then that player is entitled to play. If a player cant make practice it is their responsibility to let the coach know. CC United coaches do not look to develop a strong line up to win games. They will strive to develop the team and the committed players within to be as competitive as possible We will strive to win not to win at all costs
Goals and Objectives CC United coaches are given goals and objectives for their own age group . These objectives have 7 months in which to be achieved and are shared with the parents and players, allowing them to see beyond results for a measure of success. The objectives are both team and player orientated and will set a precedent of what the coach will be covering in all practices. Using this format will ensure that each player receives specific age appropriate training at the correct time in the year and this will also will serve as a form of self evaluation for each of the coaches. The development topics increase in difficulty as the team gets older and increases in ability. It is recommended that the coaches go through the younger age groups topics before progressing giving the players a foundation to build on Two types of training – Technical and Functional with a ratio of 6-1 When the season begins each player will have received a session in all techniques so the remaining two and a half months will focus in on either a high usage techniques (passing/Dribbling/receiving) or one specific technique that the team is having trouble with that is affecting their performance in games. Defending At U9 and 10 a minimal amount time will be spent working on defending. Individually the coach will focus on the player winning possession through correct body shape, distance to the ball and patience. The coach will emphasize good team shape so the topic of 2nd defender on the field will not be a problem. At U9 and 10 most time will be spent coaching positive techniques stressing the importance of maintaining possession successfully creating scoring opportunities through as many different players as possible.

Evaluation Procedure The purpose of the evaluation procedure is to calculate the level of play that is appropriate for each player’s needs. Parent Education To the parents of the U10 Girls team This past week in our two practices we worked on passing back to the goalkeeper and long distance passing. For our long distance passing we worked on the position of the non kicking foot and the striking area of the ball. Most of the girls were able to pass the ball across the width of the field. This is something they can strive to complete by the end of the season. Please try to recognize the difference between a long distance pass and a boot up the field. A pass is purposeful and to someone’s feet or to a specific space that they can run onto The reason we pass back to the goalkeeper is to eliminate pressure from an opponent that plays constant long passes or boot ball. Most teams we play against just kick the ball out in panic or try to turn. Turning in this situation is risky as the player on the ball cannot see the field and booting it out gives the ball to the other team closer to our goal. We want our kids to be comfortable in this high pressure environment. The problem on receiving the pass is that the goalkeeper cannot use her hands so we then need our supporting players to get wide and get ready to receive the ball. If we are successful we will eliminate teams that only play direct and we also draw the opponents closer to our goal creating more space closer to theirs. This style may create mistakes that are costly so please be ready to support the player who attempts this as the rewards far outweigh the risks. We will provide gloves and some basic technical training. What we want from our goalkeepers is to first use their feet and then their hands as their 1st job is to cover the back line of players and be ready to run out and kick away any through balls. Our goalkeepers are not restricted to their penalty box. The penalty box is the only area they can use their hands if the ball wasn’t passed back from one of our team mates. On picking up the ball she can move anywhere inside the box with the goal of finding an open player to distribute to. Game Objectives Introduction When teams play, the players, coaches and parents all walk away with one thing in common knowledge. The result and how it happened. Who scored the goals, what the referee did and what other outside factors were in play to affect the score of the game. They focus on how their child played and praise their performance without understanding the requirements are in any one position on the field. Starting 2008 the coaches and players at CC United will look to achieve certain objectives in each game. The Objectives will not only aid their team performance but will also look to give players a better understanding on how the team works and how to play their position. This will also put more pressure on the coach, who must devise a practice during the week to work on the game objective. For many years the coach has always taken the team away from the parents leaving them unaware on what has been worked on or the development process the players go through. Understanding the game is a massive concept and is one that is too big to try and tackle in one piece. Procedure Each week the coach will work on a theme and lead it into a game objective. The game objectives are listed in order that the players need to accomplish. It may be possible to achieve more than one objective in a game. The coach will move on when the team demonstrates a recognition of when/ how to execute In the following slides are a list of game objectives. The coach will replace the formation with players names and print a copy for the players before each game. The players then share this information with the parents.
GK Game Objective 1 F Establishing Depth The forward should be the highest player never coming back to defend. The forward’s positioning is either level with the last defender on the opposing team or on the half way line pending on which one is closest to the opponents goal The Goalkeeper should move up with the team (coming out of the penalty box) maintaining a distance behind the last defender appropriate for cover
W Game Objective 2 W Establishing Width Our wide players are key as through their positioning they give us either a passing option or create room to attack centrally. When the team is in possession of the ball the wide players must be the closest players to the sideline
Game Objective 3 To maintain our TOTAL team attacking shape Our shape should expand in possession Our Shape (including GK) should move forward and backwards in relation to the ball The Wide players should move up and back making diamonds with the central players
Game Objective 4 Whilst the game is in motion to get players comfortable in changing or breaking out of positions and continuing to maintain our team shape
Game Objective 5 To improve our defensive team shape When we lose possession of the ball our shape must get smaller and compact. Giving the opponent no room to pass
Game Objective 6 To pass the ball from one side to the other (switch) using any of our central players To do this we need players to stay wide so that when the final pass is made the receiving player is either 1v1 or has space to dribble into
Game Objective 7 To get the back players comfortable in playing back to the goalkeeper Note: As the ball is going back to the keeper the fullbacks are getting wide to make a diamond. The keepers next decision will be based on how the opponents react
Game Objective 8 To get the team comfortable in playing from a goal kick To do this the goalkeeper places the ball in the middle of the Goal area (small box) The wide players must go wide and the two central players split between central right and central left Note: if the opponents mark up all of our player the GK is encouraged to kick to space or the field players look to change places
