1960’s National Headlines • Two white public schools in New Orleans are the first to integrate. • The march on Washington took place on August 1, 1963. More than 200,000 people came from all over the country. The march was peaceful and orderly. • On November 22, 1963, JKF traveled to Texas to campaign. Governor Connally and his wife Nelly rode with Jackie and John in an open limo. Suddenly shots rang out and bullets struck Connallywounding him and killing JFK. • Two airliners collide over Staten Island, 134 died. • Emily Post, Queen of Etiquette dies • The worlds first weather satellite, Trios is launched. • 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed on September 15, 1963. The explosion killed four young women and the bombing marked a turning point for the Civil Right Movement in 1964.
