House vs. Pins By: Rachel Carroll
Problem • How do regular household liquids (bleach, salt water, regular water, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, and Coke) effect the appearance of the safety pins?
Overview • I wanted to see what happened when I put safety pins in commonly used household liquids. I thought that they would become rusty or dissolve.
Research • Books • Websites
Variables • Independent Variable: The safety pins that were put in the bleach and Detergents • Dependent Variable: How rusty the pins are • Constant Variable: The pins that weren’t out into any liquids • Control Group:
Hypothesis • The liquids (like bleach and detergents) that are used for cleaning are going to have more rust on them.
Materials • Containers 100 mL of each liquid • Bleach 200 mL containers • Laundry Detergent • Dishwasher Detergent • Salt • Water • Measuring cup • Spoon (Mix Stuff)
Procedure • Measure each liquid (100 mL) • Pour each liquid in container • Stir every hour • Keep in container for 4 days • Take pins out • Observe what happened over the 4 days
Conclusion • My hypothesis was true because the cleaning liquids either were rusty or had dissolved the safety pins. I learned that safety pins are very sensitive to any type of liquid, mostly cleaning supplies and soft drinks.
Errors • Water didn’t do anything • Smelled like feet • Bleach was out of control • Dishwasher detergent dried up causing lack of rust
Recommendations • Should have nails instead of bobby pins • More liquids (soft drinks and Oxi Clean) • Leave in for 1 week
