Project Objectives • To design a monitoring system to record data from the wind turbine and use this data to improve on the power generation . • Design and build a foundation to raise the height of the turbine over any obstacles and bring it closer to the recommended height. • Use the monitoring system to observe turbine performance including vibrations transmitted by the turbine into the roof slab. • Modify foundation in response to vibrations analysis • Analyze the data to study trends of a wind turbine in an urban environment
Design Specifications • Purpose – Increase and monitor performance of Whisper 200 • Functional characteristics – Monitor energy production with relation to local wind speed, Monitor vibrations transmitted in relation to power generation, Display live video feed. • Safety- Able to withstand high velocity wind • User requirement - Use gathered data to study wind turbines in an urban environment and how to improve them
Comments • Received comment of no clear definition of what final project scope is. • Address it by redefining project into improving wind turbine performance through increased height and developing monitoring station to study performance. • Through the use of monitoring station, the wind turbine will become a tool of study of wind energy in an urban environment. • Such information can be used to further develop new solutions to improve energy generation.
Monitoring System • Live remote monitoring • Vibration • Power production • Wind behavior • Video feed • Store data to create archive of Whisper 200 performance characteristics • Post results on website
Monitoring System • Parts Ordered • 2 Accelerometers • USB data logger • USB to Ethernet Micro server • Programming • Labview • Sensors signal processing • Website • Easy display of data • Live video feed
Monitoring System-Progress • All components ordered and received • Programming currently underway. • Interfacing all components to USB data logger • Housing material purchased but not assembled yet. Working station needs to be completed before encasing it • Issue with Internet micro server connecting to network-Working with Computer Service Center • Issue with data logger in recording turbine voltage output- Limit to maximum 12V-Designing circuit to reduce load to acceptable means.
Monitoring System-Looking ahead • Resolve current issues • Finish program and debug • Install system on Whisper 200 • Begin data acquisition and publish information to website
Improved Foundation • Objective • Foundation Design • Solidworks Model • Engineering Drawings • Fabrication • Materials • Assembly
Objective • Height of the wind turbine was 9.6 Feet(Base to center of turbine) • Manufacturer states that the Whisper 200 should be placed 20 ft above trees or obstacles within 300ft. • Goal: Increase the height of the structure to capture higher wind velocity and increase voltage output.
Fabrication - Materials • Foundation parts purchased and received • (1) – 48’’ Triangular Plate • (1) – 24’’ Triangular Plate • (3) – 2’’ Diameter Schedule 40 Pipe (1/4’’ Thick) • (2) – 5 ft Angle Line (1’’ Thick) • (2) – 6 ft Steel Straight Channel
Foundation Progress • Main structure welded together and completed • H frame support installed • Looking Ahead: • Weld support truss to give greater stability • Weld current tower unto the new foundation and set it on the H frame • Install guy-wires
