Question 1 At a kick off how far must the ball travel forward? • 10 metres • 5 metres • 15 metres The ball must travel 10 metres forward through the air, the ball must then be caught or land in the field of play to avoid a penalty being awarded. If a penalty is awarded the penalty is given at the centre of the half way line.

  4. Question 2 In which situation would you award a 20m Drop Out as a Referee? • A penalty kick which has gone out of the field of play over the touch or dead in goal lines. • A kick in general play which goes out over the dead ball line. • A conversion attempt that misses. A Penalty kick can be a missed kick at goal or missed kick for touch which goes out of the field of play in goal.

  5. Question 3 In which situation would you award a Goal Line Drop out? • From a failed drop kick at goal. • A team are tackled in possession of the ball in their own in goal area. • The attacking team are held up in the opposing teams in goal area.

  6. Question 4 In what situation would you award a 20m Optional Kick (20m Restart)? a) A defender knocks on in their own in goal area. b) Failed penalty kick at goal. c) Knock On by the attacking team in their opponents in goal area.

Question 5 Following a Goal Line Drop Out, the ball fails to travel forwards 10 metres, where do you award the penalty? a) On the 20 metre line b) On the 10 metre line c) On the Goal line The penalty is awarded on the 10 metre line as a penalty awarded on the Goal Line would result in a try being instantly scored.

Question 6 In the situations below, at a kick off, when will you penalise the player? a) When they stand in front of the kicker (over the half way line) at a kick off. b) When they stand level with the kicker. c) When they stand behind the kicker. All players must be stood level or behind any player kicking the ball. This includes restarts and kicks in general play. If players are in front they are offside and can be penalised.

Question 7 From a penalty kick to touch, the ball is miss kicked and hits the corner flag, how do you restart play? a) Goal Line Drop Out b) Tap 10 metres from Touch and the In Goal lines c) 20 metre Drop Out This is a 20 metre drop out and is the same ruling if a penalty kick at goal misses and goes out of play over the dead ball line behind the posts.

Question 8 At a Goal Line Drop Out, where should Touch Judges Position themselves? a) Both on the Half Way line b) One on the Half Way line the other 10m from the posts Touch Judges should be in this position so that they can have a clearer view of play. The majority of kicks in this situation will also be kicked to this area of the field. However, be prepared for a short drop kick as teams try to catch each other out.

Question 9 From a kick off the ball travels over 10 metres, bounces and enters touch, what is your decision? a) Penalty on the half way line. b) Scrum to the non kicking team. c) Scrum to the kicking team. From a kick off the non kicking team must attempt to keep the ball in play. By failing to ensure this they lose possession at the scrum. The scrum is taken 20m in from touch and a minimum of 10 metres from the goal line.

Question 10 At a kick off the ball crosses the dead ball line behind the posts without bouncing or being touched in the field of play first, what is your decision? a) Award a 20 metre Optional Kick b) Award a Goal Line Drop Out c) Award a Penalty to the non kicking team on the centre of the half way line. The kicker has not ensured that they have done one the requirements at the kick off and is therefore penalised.
