University Open Day 11th OctoberBA Business Enterprise Dr Paul Ferri Director of Teaching Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship Strathclyde Business School paul.ferri@strath.ac.uk
Entrepreneurship is not just about start-ups: • You can be entrepreneurial working in an established firm (e.g. in a turnaround situation, by franchising or taking over the family business) • You can be entrepreneurial in a large business (‘intrapreneurship’ e.g. new ventures/division team) • You need to think like an entrepreneur, even as an employee (‘You and Company’; ‘Brand You’, ‘Me Inc’) • You can also be entrepreneurial in a not-for-profit context (social entrepreneurship)
It is… • A way of thinking, reasoning and acting that is opportunity-obsessed • About recognising opportunities followed by the willingness to seize them in order to create value (and ultimately wealth) And… • It requires action! Ideas are great, but you need to operationalise these in a tangible manner... • It can involve starting your own business or working in an established one to exploit the opportunity that you have identified.
Because it’s cool... Putting useful learning into entrepreneurial actions
