Divided Kingdom • Southern Kingdom: Judah (Rehoboam) • Northern Kingdom: Israel (Jeroboam) • Jerusalem was in Judah
Jeroboam and Israel • Jeroboam did not want people to return to the temple in Jerusalem • Made his own temple in a place called Bethel • Jeroboam was condemned by God for doing this • Started a line of bad kings for Israel
Ahab and Jezebel • Worst king ever in Israel was Ahab • Married the Phoenician princess Jezebel • Jezebel is one of the most evil characters in the bible • Brought the official worship of Baal to Israel • The name Jezebel now stand for an evil and deceitful woman
Elijah • Greatest prophet of the Old Testament • Name means “Yahweh is my God” • Constantly opposed the actions of Ahab and Jezebel • Caused a drought in Israel for three and a half years
Showdown on Mt. Carmel • Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a final showdown • Set up two sacrifices and the winner would be the God that sent fire from heaven to burn up the sacrifice • Prophets of Baal went first and started to cut themselves when nothing happened • Elijah made fun of them
Showdown on Mt Carmel • Prophets of Baal stop after trying all day • Elijah has 12 buckets of water dumped on his sacrifice • Elijah prays and fire from heaven consume both sacrifices • Elijah has the 450 prophets of Baal killed • The drought ends
Jezebel’s Response • Jezebel tries to kill Elijah after she hears the news • Elijah has to run for his life and asks God to take his life • God responds with what is considered one of the best pieces of descriptive language in ancient literature
Elijah Taken to Heaven • Elijah does not die • Taken to heaven in a chariot of fire • Elisha takes his place as prophet • Prophecies said Elijah would return right before the Messiah
Death of Jezebel • Jehu took over the throne of Israel by killing Ahab and Jezebel’s son Jeroboam • Jezebel thrown out of a tower window by her eunuchs and her body was eaten by dogs before it could be recovered
Fall of Israel • Israel continued to have bad kings • Israel is eventually destroyed by the Assyrian Empire • Assyrians killed most of the male population • The Assyrians moved many of the surviving Hebrews out of Israel and moved other ethnic groups in • “The lost tribes of Israel”
Fall of Judah • Judah had a mixture of good and bad kings • Protected by God from Assyria • Eventually their kings become also become evil • God removes his protection from Judah
Babylonian Captivity • Nebuchadnezzar emperor of Babylon captured Judah and destroyed the temple • Many Hebrews taken away into Babylonian Captivity • Jews would not return to the promise land for 50 years
