Make the world a better place through Service Learning By: Adrienne Williams
What is Service Learning? • According to Wikipedia.com, service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community.
Why is Service Learning Important? • I think service learning is important because it teaches great leadership skills. Service learning also helps one to get involved with their community, and make society as a whole a better place.
What are the Benefits of Service Learning? • Looks great on a resume • Boost self-esteem • Affects people worldwide in a positive way
The Pro’s of Service Learning • Teaches responsibility • Gain self-worth • It gives you a feeling of accomplishment • Helps the community
The Con’s of Service Learning • Some work can be boring • Work can be time consuming
Food Bank • The first place I did my community service was America’s Second Harvest of South Georgia, which is otherwise known as The Food Bank. My job there was to sort Kix cereal from a huge box into small plastic bags. I was told to seal the bag, put a label on nutrition facts, and lastly, box them. The work was very time consuming, but my friends helping me made the experience better.
Goodwill was the second place that I did my community service. I had to sort clothes according to what condition they were in, and put them on a hanger ranging from infants to men. If the clothes had stains, holes, or it was not something I would wear then I was instructed to put them in huge bin.
Reflection • Before I came to Valdosta I already had the experience of volunteering in my hometown of Stone Mountain, GA. I never thought I would partake in any service learning activities in Valdosta, but this experience has been great for me. I really enjoyed helping out at the food bank especially because it was for a good cause. I will probably start going more often to volunteer on my free time.
What did I learn? • I learned that Community service is very important. I also learned about places that I can go whenever I feel like volunteering on my free time. I know that I have affected people everywhere in a positive way by doing community service. I now know that volunteering should be done out of the kindness of my heart and not just because I have to.
