This is the Desert! (tune of “Oh Susannah”) Verse 1 Oh the days are hot the nights are cold the weather it is dry There’s lot’s of rock and lot’s of sand and mountains big and wide. CHORUS This is the desert The sun is in our eyes Just look around and you will see all kinds of desert life. VERSE 2 There’s cactus here and cactus there and Palo verde trees. There’s cholla and some prickly pear blowing in the breeze. CHORUS Verse 3 There’s desert tortoise and there’s snakes and gila monsters too. There’s spotted owls and cactus wren just to name a few. Way Out in the Desert (to the tune of “Over in the Meadow”) Way out in the desert having fun in the sun lived a mother horned toad and her little toady one. “Scurry!” said the mother. “I scurry!” said the one. So they scurried in a hurry having fun in the sun. Way out in the desert where the wildflowers bloom, lived a mother desert tortoise and her little ones two. “Crawl!” said the mother. “We crawl!” said the one. So they crawled in the sand where the wildflowers bloom. Way out in the desert by the paloverde tree lived a mother kangaroo rat and her little ones three. “Snooze!” said the mother. “We Snooze!” said the three, so they snoozed all day by the paloverde tree. Way out in the desert on the Grand Canyon floor lived a mother rattlesnake and her little onesfour. “Rattle!” said the mother. “We rattle!” said the four, so that rattled and they rattled on the Grand Canyon floor. Way out in the desert where there’s rocks to climb lived a mother ring tail cat and her little ones five. “Chitter!” said the mother. “We chitter!” said the five, so they chittered and they chittered where there’s rocks to climb. Way out in the desert where the prickly pear pricks lived a mother Javelina and her little ones six. “Growl!” said the mother. “We growl!” said the six, so they growled and they growled where the prickly pear pricks. Way out in the desert in a tree under heaven, lived a mother gila woodpecker and her little ones seven. “Peck,” said the mother, “we peck” said the seven, so they pecked and pecked in a tree under heaven. Way out in the desert where the moon stays up late, lived a mother gila monster and her little ones eight. “Hiss, said the mother, “We Hiss” said the eight. So they hissed and they hissed where the moon stays up late. Way out in the desert underneath a pinyon pine, lived a mother coyote and her little ones nine. “Howl,” said the mother, “we howl” said the nine. So they howled and howled underneath a pinyon pine. Way out in the desert with a stinger on the end, lived a mother scorpion and her little ones 10. “Sting” said the mother, “we sting”, said the one. So they stung and they stung with their stinger on the end.
