Pyotr (Peter) Tchaivoksky • Was born in Votkinsk, Vlatka district, Russia on May 7, 1840. • Died November 6, 1893 in St. Petersburg, Russia (53 years old).
Childhood • Father, LlyaPetrovichTchaikovksy. • Mother, Alexandra Andreyevna nee D’Assier (Second of Three wives). • 4 brothers (Nikolai,Ippolit, Anatoly and Modest) one full sister Alexandra and a half sister Zinaida.
Early life • Began to learn piano when he was 5 years old. • Able to read music within 3 years. • Sent to Imperial School of Jurisprudence in Saint Petersburg, Russia at age 10. • Separation from mother was detrimental to him especially with her death 4 years later. • This promoted his first composition, a waltz for his past mother.
Pursuing Music and Composition • Due to lack of popular Russian music this path was always told to him to have no future. • Began with a music theory class taught by Nikolai Zaremba. • Joined the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. • After a year in the conservatory left his ministry position to pursue his dream.
Personal Life • Some say Tchaikovsky was a homo-sexual which caused a lot of his music to be over criticised. • First marriage attempt was with an opera singer named Desiree Artot, but she didn’t want to settle down • Wanted to marry to secure his sexual freedom and allow him to live a “double” sexual life.
Known For • 74 works including; • 6 Symphonies • 3 ballets (The nutcracker, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty) • Most well known work; 1812 Overture • Being the first Russian composer with lasting impression on world music.
Composition Style • Schumann Influenced his formal structure and the amount of self in his music. • Strange Meters often causing his rhythms to become the main thing you hear. • Struggled with Sonata form, created independent sections in his music.

Overture of 1812 • Tchaikovsky’s Overture of 1812 is a huge spectacle of concert musicians including; Huge gongs, Bells, and even cannon fire! • Some Americans believe it is about the American Revolution. • Actually the story of Napoleon retreating from Russian in 1812
