Atlantic Forest Biome Is made up of 15 ecoregions
Main causes of the deforestation • Expansion of agricultural activities • Infrastructure construction • City growth • Non-sustainable exploitation of forests This makes the Atlantic Forest one of the most threatened subtropical forests in the world
Where do we work? UPPER PARANÁ ATLANTIC FOREST Originally covered 500,000 km² Nowadays, a little less than 35,000 km² are conserved; only 7.4% of its original area SERRA DO MAR Has already lost more than half of its 127,411 km² original area
A joint effort with the same objective “To stop species extinction and continue with essential environmental services along with immediate actions that ensure the long term viability of representative biodiversity of the Atlantic Forest”
Towards a Zero Net Deforestation by 2020 WWF and FVSA are contributing to establish a global benchmark against which efforts can be measured, and consolidating efforts to stop deforestation through several national and international initiatives
The need for commitment One forest, three countries Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina works in forest conservation and restoration, sustainable use of natural resources and enviromental education. In addition, it promotes the sanction and effective implementation of national and provincial laws to protect natural forests. In 2006, as a signatory party to the Biodiversity Convention, the Brazilian government established its national biodiversity objectives for 2010, through the National Committee for Biodiversity. The objectives aim to implement their commitment to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010. Amongst the challenges, they have taken on the responsibility of protecting at least 10% of the ecosystems which are a part of the brazilian Atlantic Forest by creating protected areas. For example, the implementation of Law 26,331 of Minimum Budgets for Environmental Protection of Native Forests is a priority.
The need for commitment One forest, three countries In Brazil, is vital to achieve 2 important CBD commitments for 2010: at least 10% of the ecosystems under PA and stop deforestation. WWF Brazil works on the creation and improvement of public and private protected area management, and on the recovery of priority areas to establish biodiversity corridors to connect different fragments of the forest.
The need for commitment One forest, three countries In Paraguay, is esencial the fulfilment of the Zero Deforestation Law until 2013. WWF Paraguay works to strengthen protected areas by improving its infrastructures and controls for the implementation of environmental laws, carrying out prevention campaigns and promoting the development of scientific investigations. Also, it helps to create biodiversity corridors.
