This Year’s Preparations • Collecting data and research • Visiting classrooms to determine training needs • Participating in webinars: Project RED, New Tech Network • Conference calls with other districts • On-site visits (Mooresville, NC; Anson, NC; Oradell, NJ) • Meeting with vendors • Creating rubric for evaluating new devices • Conducting needs assessment
Step-by-Step Assessment Process • Step 1 – Inventory equipment in every school, every room • Step 2 – Calculate testing needs by school using largest grade, pull out needs, and testing window (minimum need) • Step 3 – Ensure minimum needs met by school with equipment under warranty • Step 4 – Define recommended technology for integrated instruction and expected use of digital resources • Step 5 – Calculate cost options (buy vs. lease)
Assessment includes… • Servers, routers, switches (“the backbone”) • Teacher laptops • Student laptops • Computer labs • Laptop carts • Desktop computers in the classrooms • Wireless equipment • Cameras (new this year)
Not Included in Assessment • IP telephony phones • Ancillary technology (iPads, iPods) • Interactive white boards
Funding Sources • State technology grant ($726,000) • Existing media services budget ($832,454) • Major-minor capital reserves • Laptop reserves (self-insured) • Warranty reimbursements • Student insurance fees • Budget reductions in other areas
