Advantages and Disadvantages of Fossil Fuels Jessica, Myah and Abdullah
How much coal is required to run 100-Watt bulb, 24 hours a day, for one year? • Light Bulb’s Power = 0.1 kW (100/1000) • Number of hours in a year = 8,760 hours (365*24) • Total energy in a year = 876 kW (8,760*0.1) • Thermal energy content of coal = 6,150 kWh/ton • Thermal energy of coal to electricity = 40% • Electricity generated = 2,460 (0.4 *6,150) • Coal required = 325 kg (876/2,460 = 0.357 tons)
Advantages • Formed from fossilized plants and animals, making it easy to find. • Generates huge amounts of electricity. • Power plants using fossil fuels can be almost anywhere.
Disadvantages • Non- renewable resource • Releases gases into atmosphere • Won’t always be available • Pollution and acid rain
