Indian Steel industry and major players • More than a century old: started with the establishment of TISCO in 1907 • 4th largest producer of steel in the world with production capacity of 50MT • Major producers: SAIL, Tata Steel, JSW Steel • SAIL integrated steel plants: RSP,BSP, DSP, etc • Employs more than 2 million employees
Tata Steel • Founded in the year 1907 • Currently world’s 7th largest steel company • Production capacity: 31 MT of crude steel per year • Ranked 410 on the Fortune Global 500
Trade unions of Tata Steel • It consists of 25 trade unions at different locations, largest being Tata Workers Union • Consultation and negotiation with employers via three-tier system • Direct interaction with the MD via online forum • Collective bargaining issues are discussed regularly with recognized unions
Durgapur Steel Plant • One of the largest integrated steel plants of SAIL • Set up in the 1950s • Current Capacity:2088MT hot metal, 1.8 MT Crude steel,1.58MT saleable steel • Entire Plant covered under ISO 9001:2000 • Total no of employees -29224 • Workers: 26724 , • Executives : 2500
