Function of the blood • To carry oxygen and nutrients to the cells and carry waste products to proper locations for excretion
Blood Plasma • 45% of blood volume consists of cells and 55% is plasma • Straw colored • 90% water and 10% dissolved gases, salts, nutrients, enzymes, hormones, waste products, and proteins
Blood Cells • Red Blood Cells transports oxygen • White Blood Cells Attack foreign substances or organisms • Platelets Blood clotting
Blood Plasma Platelets White blood cells Red blood cells Whole Blood Sample Sample Placed in Centrifuge Blood Sample That Has Been Centrifuged
Function of Lymphatic System • Collects fluid that is lost by the blood and returns it to the circulatory system
Types of White Blood Cells Cell Type Neutrophils Eosinophils Basophils Monocytes Lymphocytes Function Engulf and destroy small bacteria and foreign substances Attack parasites; limit inflammation associated with allergic reactions Release histamines that cause inflammation; release anticoagulants, which prevent blood clots Give rise to leukocytes that engulf and destroy large bacteria and substances Some destroy foreign cells by causing their membranes to rupture; some develop into cells that produce antibodies, which target specific foreign substances
Blood Types • Group A Alleles may be AA or AO • Group B Alleles may be BB or BO • Group AB Alleles are AB • Group O Alleles are OO
Therefore: • Universal donor= group O Group O blood may be transfused to anyone! • Universal receiver = group AB Someone that is group AB may receive any type of blood without risk of a transfusion reaction
Blood Transfusions Section 37-2 Blood Type of Recipient Blood Type of Donor A B AB O A B AB O Unsuccessful transfusion Successful transfusion
RH Factor • Positive or negative • Someone who is positive can receive both RH positive and negative blood • Someone who is negative can only receive negative blood
Emergency • In the case of an emergency: O negative blood can be transfused without risk of a transfusion reaction
