  3. History of the Prayer Rug • Muslims are required to perform the five compulsory prayers daily • Only requirement in Islam is that prayers be performed in a clean area, which is why Muslims do not wear shoes in mosques • They are NOT universally used by Muslims are required in Islam

  4. What is a prayer rug? • Look like small “oriental carpets,” or nice pieces of embroidery. About 1 meter long and almost always has an arch • Designs usually very detailed with geometric, floral, arabesque or depict Islamic landmarks • Has a “top” and “bottom” • Creates isolated space • Some prayer rugs include a lamp hanging from the arch to symbolize Allah
