AGENDA: 12/5/2013 E.Q.: Does my defense thoroughly explain my theme in connection to Night and accurately connect this theme with my group’s artifact? Character Analysis Explanation Continue working on Artifacts and Defense Writing Continue conferencing with Ms. Howard on Defense Writing. Remember: you must make a thematic connection to Night!
Before you begin writing your character analysis, be sure you understand the difference between ANALYZING a literary character (as found in a character analysis) and merely DESCRIBING one. Description focuses on the physical or external qualities of a character, whereas analysis focuses on the internal workings of a character- motivation, personality, and how these factors shape/determine the events and ultimate outcome of the work. EVERY PERSON IN YOUR LITERATURE CIRCLE MUST CHOOSE A DIFFERENT CHARACTER TO ANALYZE!! Character Analysis
Topic Sentence: Franek, a dynamic character in Elie Wiesel’s Night, reveals the dominance of human greed over human goodness in times of hardship. What concrete details would we use with this topic sentence? Character Analysis Example
Character Analysis Example Concrete Detail #1: “Franek, the foreman, put me into a corner. ‘Don’t kill yourself; there’s no hurry.’ ‘Please…I would have liked to be by my father.’ ‘All right. Your father’ll be working here by your side’” (33). Of course, I would have to include a lead-in in my final paragraph!
Commentary: This quote shows Wiesel’s initial impression of Franek; he is kind enough to allow Elie and his father to work side-by-side in the warehouse. Commentary: This quote is significant because Franek’s small show of benevolence is unusual in the camp, yet this kindness is short-lived. Character Analysis Example
