Satire • Satire is a form of social commentary. • Satire is a form of literature that focuses on human or individual vices (fault), follies (lack of good sense), abuses (wrongful practices), or shortcomings (flaw) that are highlighted through ridicule (exploit), parody (literary mockery), or irony,ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.[ • Although satire is usually meant to be funny, the purpose of satire is not primarily humor in itself so much as an attack on something of which the author strongly disapproves, using the weapon of wit. • Why do you think so many forms of satire that is popular and utilized today comes in the form of comedy/humor?

Mark Twain: America’s Satirist 1835-1910 • Pseudonym: Mark Twain (Birth name: Samuel Clemens) • Twain was a successful lecturer (America’s humorist), generating money and fame via speaking tours throughout the United States and Europe. • When Twain disliked you, you knew it. Twain was quick to criticize fellow writers and the honest way he wrote about the government made politicians irate. • Twain made lots of money, but he lost most of it. He was as bad at investing as he was good at writing, and he eventually had to declare bankruptcy. • On April 20, 1910, Halley's comet was seen in the sky. Twain always said that he had come with the comet and would go with it. This was less a joke than a prophecy, for he died on April 21, 1910.
