Science begins with questions • Scientific Method • Hypothesis – “an educated guess” about how something works • Must be testable to be useful • Can test by experimentation
What makes a good experiment? • Control (s) • Test group(s) • Results: • Can only disprove the hypothesis – can never “prove” that it is true • Use statistics because responses can differ • Causation vs. correlation • Was your experimental design flawed?
Theory • Is the “best guess” we have at this time • A set of interconnected hypotheses that have withstood repeated experimental testing.
How are all organisms alike? • Made of organized parts • Made of cells • Perform chemical reactions • Obtain energy from their surroundings • Respond to their environment • Mature (change) over time • Reproduce • Have a common evolutionary history
Homeostasis : maintaining a constant internal environment in spite of changes in the external environment.
