  4. Introduction Definition of 21st Century Skills – Fundamental skills of critical thinking and problem solving, as well as information, computer, and communication skills. *These skills are very different from the skills needed to succeed in higher education and the workplace 20 years ago.

Jobs of the Future! • Gene Diagnostician • Major research and teaching hospital seeks highly skilled individual to assist with DNA-based diagnosis to better identify and develop customized treatment for patients. Must be able to collaborate and interact with medical teams and patients, as well as conduct basic research. • Personal Virtual-Presence Agent • Growing agency seeks individual for full-time job as a personal virtual-presence agent to create and shape a client’s global online image. Must be able to act on behalf of the client to create multimedia life recordings, navigate the Twitter networks, troll the Web to locate gossip about the client, and approve Web references about the client before they are posted. • Automotive Hybrid and Fuel-Cell-Vehicle Research Engineer • Major auto manufacturer seeks renaissance engineer with the ability to innovate and solve complex development problems for hybrid-electric, battery-electric and fuel-cell electric (hydrogen) vehicles. Must be able to leverage the commonality in electrical and hydrogen environments and coordinate the interfaces between various technological subsystems.

Technology (Digital Literacy)--more than computers, it’s knowing how to use the digital containers (Internet, blogs, wikis, databases) of information.” Media Literacy-- ability to access, analyze, evaluate and produce print and electronic media.   11. 12-13 Transition Project • INFOhio and OhioLINK special task force • Goal: assist student transition from K-12 environment to college and to the workplace • Purpose: to further the development of an information literate workforce who utilizes critical thinking skills and information effectively and ethically • Task at hand: highlight to schools, colleges, and state decision-makers how libraries are contributing to the state’s overall goal of preparing our students and educators for 21st century learning and teaching.

Goal 1Developing 21st Century Skills • Teach all Ohio high School students the 21st century information literacy skills needed for transition from high school to college and into the world of work. • Audit process in place statewide for preparing students for the transition to college and rigorous research that reflects 21st century information literacy skills. • Develop guidelines for information research processes required to make successful transition from high school to college and work. Identify necessary 21st century information literacy skills.

  15. Goal 1 (cont.)Survey Results What did we ask? • How is your school teaching information literacy skills? • What barriers exist to you teaching information literacy skills? Overall, teachers expressed a fragmented/incomplete understanding of the concept of information literacy. Teachers are positive about information literacy skills and complimentary of school librarians’ efforts, BUT barriers exists such as: Time Money Too many standards No ownership of who should be teaching the standards

Goal 2Incorporate Research Experience • Create awareness campaign and develop best practice plan to promote importance of information literacy skills and ensure all students are introduced to them. • Develop inquiry-based program to teach high school students, particularly those in STEM, to move beyond free Internet sources for research and utilize scholarly journals and primary source materials offered via the networks and Internet2.

Goal 2 (cont.)Incorporate Research Experiences • Incorporate robust research experiences into classroom teaching strategies to better prepare Ohio’s juniors and seniors for college-level research. • Create professional development opportunities which allow classroom teachers to work collaboratively with school and academic librarians to develop robust research assignments that help develop students’ research skills. • Design collaborative research projects between high school and college classrooms to prepare students for the rigors of college research and the world of work.

Goal 3Deliver Research Resources • Provide students and educators with free and equitable access to an essential academic core collection of online and physical library materials appropriate to PreK-20 research. • Appoint joint INFOhio/OhioLINK group to recommend list of research resources needed to support a world-class PreK-20 Ohio education system and Ohio’s 21st century libraries. • Resources that help students draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations and create new knowledge. • Resources that are appropriate for PreK-20 students and meet the research needs of teachers and faculty.

Goal 3 (cont.)The INFOhio Core Collection Survey • Identify resources that help students draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations and create new knowledge; are appropriate for the K-12 students, and meet the research needs for teachers. • Evaluate current core collection of INFOhio and OhioLINK's resource offerings and recommend a list of resources needed to support a world-class P-20 Ohio education system and Ohio’s 21st century libraries.

Goal 3 (cont.)Survey Results What did we ask? • Rank the most important INFOhio online resources. • Rank the 5 most critical areas of need for additional online resources • Survey results indicate a strong need for the existing databases listed below to remain part of INFOhio’s core collection: • EBSCO databases (mentioned 707 times; ranked #1- 280 times) • World Book / Online encyclopedia (mentioned 715 times; ranked #1 - 216 times) • SIRS Discoverer (mentioned 691 times; ranked #1- 79 times) • Science Online (mentioned 697 times; ranked #1- 27 times) • Literature Online (mentioned 683 times; ranked #1 – 27 times) • Considering the rankings, EBSCO databases and World Book Online are obviously essential resources for the P-12 community.

Goal 4Prepare Student Teachers • Inform Ohio’s education faculty that the preparation of student teachers must include 21st century information literacy skills and how collaboration with school librarians can contribute to these instructional objectives. • Determine what Ohio’s education faculty currently deliver pertaining to 21st century information literacy skills and the preparation of student teachers. • Create workshops to support the development of information literacy skills for student teachers.

Goal 5Partner with Groups Statewide • Partner with state initiatives and advocacy groups to encourage them to incorporate information literacy skills within their own goals. • Implement Preparing 21st Century Ohio Learners for Success white paper and action plan. • Ascertain which state initiatives and advocacy groups to contact and begin developing a partnership of collaboration for increasing information skills knowledge for Ohio’s global economy.

Goal 6Enabling Collaboration • Provide school and academic librarians with opportunities to work together to develop collaborations supporting the transition of secondary school students to college-level research. • Determine all possible cross-meeting linkages and develop others that will create this collaborative partnership for consistent resource sharing across PreK-20. • Inform communities of white paper and action plan via conferences, regional meetings, workshops, etc.
