Some Rules! You love rules. • Pg. 48 • Use third person pronouns! • Repeat key words, like “Student Council” • However, use synonyms • Transitional words are essential • However, in addition, later, etc.
Attribution • Pg. 51 • You must properly attribute facts and opinion • Readers must know where reporter got facts (best possible source) • Establishes credibility • Allows reader to make assessment of facts the reporter presents
Attribution • Must separate facts from opinion • The news story is not a place for a reporter’s opinion—unattributed opinion is called editorializing • You might say that the prom decorations are “beautiful decorations,” but even “beautiful” is editorializing and must be removed • Do notquote facts.
Use “Said.” • ‘Nuff said. Ha ha!
Begin Your paragraphs Well • Each paragraph should begin with a significant fact and use interesting, specific words • Pg. 54 has some examples of word choices. Take a look! • Use active voice. Duh. • Don’t use cliché. It’s so cliché. • Avoid slang (street language), coarse, or sexually suggestive terms • Check the checklist on pg. 56 to ensure you have a good story!
