Objective Today, we will be learning about the spread of Greek culture.
Greek Culture Spreads • Alexandria: • *B/c the center for learning • *Had a library w/500,000 scrolls • *Researchers flocked • Hellenistic kingdoms had to be built or rebuilt. • Architects built baths, theaters, & temples along the streets.
*Hellenistic kings & wealthy citizens paid handsomely for statues & temples. Money was also spent to support literature. Appolonius of Rhodes wrote Argonautica.
Greek Culture Spreads • Argonautica: • *Jason & band of heroes • *Search for ram w/ golden fleece. • Theocritus • *Wrote short poems about the beauty of nature
Philosophy • Epicureanism: • *Founded by Epicurus • *Happiness was the goal of life • *To be happy seek pleasure • *Pleasure = friends & not worrying • *Thus no politics
