The SMILE Program is ... • An academic enrichment and college recruitment program for historically underrepresented and other educationally underserved/disadvantaged students in Oregon • A collaboration between Oregon State University and public school districts • A program of activities that influence student attitudes and behaviors about learning and staying in school
The Purpose of SMILE • To increase the numbers of historically under- • represented and other educationally under- • served students who: • Graduate from high school • Pursue higher education and prepare for • careers in • Engineering Mathematics • Science Health Profession • Teaching
Student Persistence • In 2003-2004, 70% of all SMILE students returned to the program, including: • 336 students with 2+ years in SMILE • 141 students with 4 + years in SMILE • 25 students with 8+ years in SMILE
High School Graduation Rates Hispanic & Native American Students All Oregon Students Students with 2 years in SMILE Students with 4 or more years in SMILE • State graduation rates are provided by the Oregon Department of Education, Office of Policy and Research. • SMILE participant rates are taken from the program database.

The Challenge SMILE high school students come to WOU and OSU for a scenario where they put their scientific knowledge to use in a community-based problem solving model.
The Scenario • 2004-2005: Oil Spill Remediation • Students were invited to an Oil Spill Remediation Conference (modeled off of the NOAA -SOS - Science of Oil Spills) • While they were at the conference an oil spill occurred, and they were asked to help make remediation plans.
