Basics of Network AggregationWhat you should know about bandwidth provided by MOREnet compared commercial vendors
Circuit Basics • Every connection requires a local circuit • This is the piece that connects your building to the service providers network (cloud) • This can be provided by traditional telephone companies, cable companies or even utility companies
Local Circuit Details • The speed of your internet access will never be faster than your local circuit connection • Your circuit should be fully dedicated, committed bandwidth 24x7x365 • Some providers don’t guarantee the purchased bandwidth amount. • This local circuit will be connected to the shared network of the service provider network through something called aggregation circuits
What is aggregation • A local circuit will be aggregated with other circuits to the same service provider network • MOREnet uses a very low (most of the time 1:1) ratio for aggregation • For every 1 Megabit of bandwidth delivered to the member site, MOREnet has that capacity dedicated all the way to the Internet. • Some providers utilize a higher aggregation ratio and have more local circuit capacity than what the aggregation circuit can handle. This introduces network congestion and latency which may impact how well your network and applications perform. • This is similar to merging 3 four-lane highways onto one four-lane
Samples of Aggregation ModelsMOREnet Model • For every local circuit, the total accumulated bandwidth is available at every upstream aggregation point.
Samples of Aggregation ModelsTypical Vendor Model • This diagram shows a high aggregation ratio. • The provider sells bandwidth on the assumption that not every site will be using all their bandwidth at the same time. • Ask prospective vendors to provide numbers for the ?? This allows you to be an informed consumer and to know what bandwidth your organization can expect.
Samples of Aggregation ModelsTypical DSL Model • Vendors in this model will count on over subscription to downstream sites, but that may be detrimental to your bandwidth needs
Questions to Ask a Potential ISP. • Is this bandwidth guaranteed 24x7? • Is this bandwidth sustained or “up to” depending upon availability? • What is the providers network aggregation ratio? • Will you provide the router? • Will you manage the router? • MORE questions please!
Other considerations • Make sure the provider never throttles (turns down) your connection, even if all bandwidth is consumed every hour of the day. • Does the provider have live technical support that can help you during the day when you have problems?
