Objectives • Identify the three types of digestive systems. • Describe the parts of each digestive system. • Know the differences in the three types of digestive systems.
What is a digestive system? • Provides food for the body and for all of its systems • Stores food temporarily, prepares for use by the body, and removes waste products from the body • Types: • Polygastric/Ruminant • Monogastric • Poultry
Polygastric/Ruminants • Have more than one compartment in their stomach • Rumen- holds large amounts of roughages • Roughage- grass, hay, silage, or other high-fiber feed • Examples: • Cows • Sheep • Goats • Deer
Monogastric • Stomach with only one compartment • Most digestion takes place in the small intestine • Rations must be higher in concentrates • Concentrates- grains low in fiber and high in total digestible nutrients • Examples: • Swine • Horses
Poultry • Chickens have no teeth; have to swallow their food whole • Rations must be high in food value because poultry have no true stomachs
Review • What are the three types of digestive systems? • What does ruminant mean? • What does monogastric mean? • Why are poultry classified as a different digestive system?
