Abstract Theatre Design • The idea of abstract art can carry over into other areas of art, including production design. • Abstract means a style of art (line, shape, color, ect) that may not exist in the real world or be rational at all. • While having a completely abstract production might have a high “cool” or “art” factor, it may alienate an audience.
Assignment • Using the script analysis provided, create some abstract ideas for a production design for The Glass Menageries. • Once you have some abstract ideas, create a more concrete design that would work in a “real” production but also incorporates at least 3 of your abstract ideas.
S.A. of The Glass Menageries • Mood – Depressed by illness (both physical and mental) which prevents a family from moving beyond their current state. A sense of the sand running out of an hour glass. • Theme – You are in your own way. • Time – 1942, December 10th, takes place over several days. • Place – The Wingfield apartment, living room and dining room, Boston, MA • Society – Women are expected to be taken care of a man, who they must win with their beauty, wit, and charm. • Economics – Tom is the only one with a job (part time crewman in sailing vessals), over all, still poor, Amanda likes to think she will become rich again (like when she was young) • Intellect/Culture – Laura is in school but is always figuring out ways to quit. Tom is a drop out who hopes to escape and become a Merchant Marine (professional sea merchant), Amanda lives in the past with her mementos. • Politics/Law – musings of WW2 (pre-American involvement), few signs of pro-war movement • Spirituality – What is it going to take for you to take a risk, to seize the day, to do something other than wallow in your own misery?
