4-1: The Colonial Experience Main Idea: During the colonial period, Americans established traditions of freedom and self-government. legislatures freedom of religion freedom of the press voting
A Voice in Government • Legislatures made the laws. • This group of men was elected by the colonists. • They choose men with similar views to represent the people and make laws good for them. Legislature May Say: “No tax increase.” Monarch may say: “Tax increase!”
Some restrictions on legislatures: • Charters could be revoked by the king. • Royal governors watched the colonists for the king. • England was preoccupied with war with France.
- American colonists were the only British colony that could vote. - white, a man, and had a certain amount of land - Colonists worked for the common good - Jury duty - local militia members - volunteer army - support education and literacy Citizenship in the Colonies
Roots of Freedom • What are our basic rights? • Religious Freedom in the Colonies: • Puritans escaped from England • Roger Williams was not welcome in Massachusetts • Roger Williams founded Rhode Island • “A person could belong to any Christian church, such as Presbyterian or Anglican.
Roots of Freedom • Freedom of the Press in the Colonies: • Colonists were jailed for criticizing the king or royal governors. • John Peter Zenger jailed for publicizing that the royal governor of NY was stealing. • His attorney Andrew Hamilton argued that he had printed the truth. • Zenger was freed. • How is freedom of the press different today?
Signs of Discontent • England starts to tighten the reigns. • Taxed colonies to pay for war. • The colonists start to worry about what else England would try to do.
