  1. MITIGATING THE LOSSES CAUSED BY FLOODING Risk is the possibility of loss while risk management is the process of confronting , preparing(obtaining knowledge , insurance and protection) and coping with their effects(WDR,2014)

  2. Background • The Weija Dam covers an area of about 9000 sq. hectares and serves over 2.5million people in Accra East and Accra West all in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. • Despite its immense usefulness, it threatens the lives and properties of people in its environs every year. • This comes about anytime there are heavy rains that causes the water in the dam to exceed its limits.

  4. Continuation • As a result the spillways of the dam are opened leading to flooding in the communities closer to the dam. THE RISKS INVOLVED • Loss of lives and properties = cycles of poverty. • Financial drain on the states resources used in assisting individuals affected.

CAUSES OF THE RISK • Blatantly ignoring the dangers that building in such areas poses as a result of failure to seek knowledge of the suitability of lands before development • Failure on the part of government officials to effectively enforce the rules of demarcating and delimiting such areas and also preventing such developments from springing up in the first place

HOW CAN THE EFFECTS OF SUCH RISKS BE MINIMIZED • The need for people to be educated on the risks of building close to the dam • Government institutions responsible for monitoring in spite of the effort made to sensitize people must do more to ensure that lives and properties of people are not endangered.

  8. Continuation • Individuals could also insure their homes and properties against the destruction that such flooding could cause.
