  2. What is Viral Gastroenteritis? • Swelling of the gastro-intestinal tract • Caused by a virus • Norovirus 1

  3. Acute viral gastroenteritis

  4. Norovirus • Genus of the Caliciviridae family • Norwalk Virus • Single Stranded RNA • Second most reported virus on the United States • 23 million cases each year 2 4

  5. Symptoms of Norovirus Infection • Stomach cramping • Nausea • Watery diarrhea • Mild fever • Head or muscle aches • Vomiting (profuse, nonbloody)

  6. Transmission • Spread through fecal-oral ingestion • Only between people • Animals can be contaminated by human waste, but cannot spread the virus

  7. Other routes of infection • Contact with contaminated surfaces and then placing hand in mouth • Eating from food: • prepared unwashed hands or by infected person • Uncooked (Shellfish*, cake frosting, salads) • Aerosolized vomit

  8. Outbreaks • Food • Bravo Cucina Italiana, Santa Cruz County hotel • Contact • West Chester University pool (“superchlorification”), Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, cruise ships • Jackson Christian Schools

  9. Treatments of the Norwalk Viruses • No antiviral drugs • Futility of vaccination • variety of strains • high mutation rate • Recommendations: • Drink juices  Rehydration • Avoid milk  cramping

  10. Fatal? • Potentially fatal if left untreated • 300 deaths in the United States due to this virus • Susceptible groups • Those with weakened immune systems • Ex. Children, the elderly, AIDS victims • Dehydration is the main cause of death for those infected with the virus • Untreated diarrhea causes 5-8 million deaths worldwide every year
