Norovirus • Genus of the Caliciviridae family • Norwalk Virus • Single Stranded RNA • Second most reported virus on the United States • 23 million cases each year 2 4
Symptoms of Norovirus Infection • Stomach cramping • Nausea • Watery diarrhea • Mild fever • Head or muscle aches • Vomiting (profuse, nonbloody)
Transmission • Spread through fecal-oral ingestion • Only between people • Animals can be contaminated by human waste, but cannot spread the virus
Other routes of infection • Contact with contaminated surfaces and then placing hand in mouth • Eating from food: • prepared unwashed hands or by infected person • Uncooked (Shellfish*, cake frosting, salads) • Aerosolized vomit
