  4. Youth Counter-Culture A lot of young people blamed theirgeneration for the problems of the country Baby Boomers Parents • Vietnam War • Racial Prejudice • Threat of Nuclear War • World War II • The Great Depression

  5. UC Berkeley Famous protests at the University of California Berkeley in 1964. The University banned public speeches on campus resulting in peaceful protests and a cry for the right to free speech.

  7. Flower Power! • Peace, Love, Harmony • Being one with the Earth • Drugs • Rock and Roll • Sex • ‘The Man’ • Long Hair • Bright Colors • Tie-dye Shirts

  8. Why San Francisco? • A group of writers called had been living there since the 1950’s • Beatniks were anti-conformist, anti-materialist, and experimented with drugs and eastern religion • The psychedelic music scene

  10. Summer of Love • 100 000 thousand people visit San Francisco in the summer of 1967; many inspired to visit by the song ‘San Francisco.’ • Media attention is at its height

  11. The Decline • Haight-Ashbury District can’t sustain the thousands of people living there • Many youth are forced to sleep on the street, turning to panhandling, stealing, and drug dealing • Crime and violence skyrockets as hippie values deteriorate • Drug addiction, malnutrition, and disease become major issues
