  1. Hippies

  2. Background information • It is originally a youth movement from the United States during the mid 1960s. • Young people were protesting against the war in Vietnam and racism, and rebelling against the 'safe' route from secondary school to a good job. • Flower Power was a symbol of their beliefs. They lived in communes, and San Francisco became the hippy capital. • Towards the end of the 1960s students were protesting in colleges. They were calling for the right to express their opinions and demanding that strict rules were removed.

  3. Hippy Attitudes • Most people view hippies as lazy, unmotivated and even apathetic. • Hippies tended to take drugs to explore new levels of their state of mind. • Hippies feel strongly about world peace and global issues because they are against violence.

  4. Hippie Style • Their clothes were generally baggy and airy and consisted of multiple colours. • There was a lot of Hindu and Muslim influences on their clothing- e.g. the baggy long skirts. • Hippies hair was uncared for long hair, usually decorated by flowers and bandanas.

  5. Music Hippies use music to express themselves emotionally, spiritually, and politically. Music can make a statement, give voice to a movement, even unite us. As hippies explore their inner world, music guides them along in their quest for meaning. Without drugs it can get you high. With drugs, well, let's just say, music can be a religious experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYRTK62pVWQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRu-oEwA0Ec

  7. Hippie religion • Many hippies rejected main stream religions like Christianity and tended to embrace religions like Buddhism, Unitarian Universalism and Hinduism. • They often took drugs to widen their religious experiences.
