About AKEI ▣ AKEI (Association of Korean Exhibition Industries) • Founded in Sep. 2002. • Non-profit organization under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy • AKEI’s tasks - Support programs (on local exhibitions / participation at foreign exhibitions) - Exhibition evaluation - Exhibition auditing service

Impact of SARS on the Korean Economy • Direct impact - Export : $1,700-3,000 million(▼) - 2003 GDP growth rate : 0.4-0.6%p(▼) • Indirect impact - Employment : 89,000-119,000 persons(▼) - Consumer prices : 0.1-0.2%(▲) • Impact on industry - China-dependent industries & consumer goods-related industries hardest hit ex. steel, semi-conductor, car, PC, mobile phone, etc.

  6. Case 2 : Photo & Image Show 2003 (May. 15-18) • Positive figures attained by localization of trade exhibition, but experienced large impact businesswise

Case 3 : Korea Railways & Logistics Show 2003 (May. 28-Jun.1) • Strict limit on Asian travel by European & North American companies • Strict entry immigration control for Asian exhibitors & visitors • Cancellation by local exhibitors in anticipation of decreased participants from abroad • Minimized SARS impact through promotion of local participation

  8. Proposal • Hold regular meetings to adjust exhibition schedules of member countries • Mutual recognition of exhibition auditing among member countries • Joint promotion of exhibitions to other continents
