Topics • Identifying the challenges of recruiting creative/technical people • Creating Vision • The Plan: Team Structures that work • How to encourage and maintain growth • What kind of people do you want?
Identifying Challenges • What are the biggest challenges we face in recruiting people?
Identifying Challenges • Most people recruiting and leading technical teams are busy already doing the work. It’s hard to do the work and raise up people to do the work at the same time. • Traditional recruiting methods (bulletin, announcements, etc) don’t work. • People feel like once they’re in, their life will be sucked away by being on the tech team • People don’t feel needed or do feel used • People don’t feel connected to each other • People don’t feel connected to the vision
Solutions • We must determine a clear vision and plan and lead up in order to get the backing of your leadership to invest time in that. The cycle will never stop otherwise. • We need to change how we recruit. Impersonal pleas don’t move people to action, but relationships, a good vision and plan to reach the vision do. • Set clear expectations (what you expect from them and what they can expect from you) • Equip, release and coach • Focus on a team approach • Keep casting the vision and plan
My Vision for Teams Every volunteer deserves… (if they are going to serve ongoing) • To serve once every 2 to 3 weeks • A reasonable time commitment • Adequate training • A contact before they come to serve • A team of 5 to 10 people to meet with regularly • A leader looking out for them, who invests in them personally, not just technically • To serve with friends and people they know • Clear expectations
