Type AttributesRace • Roman—Serif • Gothic—Sans Serif • Script—Cursive • Novelty—abcdefg • Very hard to read—not appropriate for presentations
Type AttributesMembers/Styles • Plain, bold, italic, underline (inappropriate in Desktop Publishing), shadow, outline, condensed, extended
Serif or Sans Serif? • Serif type has “feet” which anchor the letters at the top and bottom. Easier to read in a block of text. • San Serif does not have the little “feet” and is more like hand-printing.
Serif or Sans Serif? • San Serif is used for • Titles • Signs • Serif is used in the body of a document—it is much easier to read.
Type to Read • Printed Type— • Body type—10 and 12 points • Headlines—24 points or larger
Type to Read • Projected Visuals— • Body type—36 points or larger • Headlines—48 points or larger (Long, narrow rooms need bigger fonts)
Special TipsNever use all capital letters: • THIS IS TOO HARD TO READ! (Serif) • THIS IS ALSO TOO HARD TO READ! (Sans Serif) • This is much easier to read! (Serif) • So is this! (Sans Serif)
Special TipsOne space: • Never press the space bar more than once. There is only one space after a period. (Check your old books!)
Special TipsInvisibles: • To see formatting characters, press the “¶” button in the toolbar. • You will see: “8” for an Enter “ž” for a Tab “–” for a space
Hanging Indents • Appropriate when using bullets. • Appropriate when using numbered lists. • When you write in a list like this, it looks unprofessional without a hanging indent!
Graphics • Always turn the graphics toward the center of the screen if it has a direction.
Using Color Red Associated with danger, it can increase blood pressure, it is stimulating, and exciting. Use sparingly. Subdued Red
Using Color Blue Cool color, associated with sweetness, safe, calming. Often used for backgrounds. Subdued Blue
Using Color Yellow Warm color, associated with happiness. Yellow reminds people of a warm sunny day and gives hope. Subdued Yellow
Using Color Purple • Cool color, associated with royalty, religion and ceremony Subdued Purple
Using Color Brown • Men associate brown with wood and leather, while women associate brown with leather and furs. • Like blue, brown is a safe color. Subdued Brown
Using Color Green • Warm or cool color, depending upon the brightness selected. • Associated with astringency and trees. • One of the most popular colors. Subdued Green
