  2. Nasal • The air escape through the nose. • There are three nasals of English : m,n,ŋ • Bilabial nasal /m/ : made by closing two lips. Example words : mother, immune, thumb. • Alveolar nasal /n/ : made by stopping the flow of air with the tongue tip against the alveolar ridge. Sample words: new, know, rain, gnat. • Velar nasal /ŋ/ : made by stopping the flow of air with the back of the tongue against the velum. Example words : singer, ringing, finger, anger. /ŋ/ occurs without a following /g/ at the end of a morpheme, in the middle it has a following /g/. 3

  3. Liquids • Lateral / l / : made by placing the tongue tip on the alveolar ridge and vibrating the vocal cords as the air passes out on one or both sides of the tongue. Example words: love, collar, people • Retroflex /r / : produced by curling the tip of the tongue near the alveolar ridge. Example words: respect, very , car 4

  4. Semi Vowels/ Glides • Glides are signaled by a moving tongue position. They are both voiceless. • Post alveolar glide /j/ : the tongue begins in the / i/ (high front) region and moves towards the position of whatever vowel follows. Example words: you, union, vineyard. • Velar glide /w/ : the tongue takes an /u / (high back position) and moves into the following vowel. Example words ; water, quiet, persuade.
